Passive…
The dream stays a dream
"Passive income" is a term we hear constantly on the internet, in podcasts, and especially from financial influencers. Like many such promises, it is too good to be true. What makes it unique is that it used to be true.
We all carry the same seductive image: put your money in the right place and it generates income with minimal effort. You put your feet up and enjoy life. Not anymore.
The concept is an old one. It traces back to those who owned productive assets (especially land) and lived off the income they produced. Think European aristocrats. The approach worked because inflation was not persistently positive as it is today and income taxes were low or nonexistent. Today the math is different.
Take a set of assets yielding a respectable 4% annual return. Apply modern reality. Income taxes (introduced in 1913) take 30–50% of that income, depending on where you live. Inflation then erodes most of what remains; most Wall Street banks assume ~2.25% annual inflation in their forecasts, for example.
You end up with roughly 1.5% in real terms, adjusted for inflation, and net of taxes. That is not life-changing income. It's $1,500 on every $100,000 you own.
As a banker I saw this strategy when people matched assets (what they owned) with liabilities (what they owed). It makes sense for a small slice, like setting aside money to repay specific debt, but taken too far it collapses. You must sell assets instead of letting them grow (this is called "invading the principal"). The same income now has to come from a smaller collection of assets, which creates an entirely new set of problems (risk).
The truth is that maintaining wealth demands ongoing attention. Markets shift. Tax laws change. Your family situation, your job, your health — everything evolves. The big moves that alter the trajectory of your wealth and your life tend to arrive infrequently, sometimes only once.
The ingredients of financial life are consistent and finite. Nobody encounters all of them. But their specific mix, sequence, and intensity in your life make your situation unique.
In the modern era, no passive strategy can account for that.
